Should PT Business Owners Be Worried About SEO?

Somewhere along the line as a physical therapy business owner you've probably heard the word "SEO". 

In our profession, we're used to hearing a lot of acronyms…and sometimes they can be confusing…
  
I remember once when I was chart reviewing in acute care cardiac I kept thinking "Wow! How weird that all these patients have CP" (thinking: cerebral palsy…I am a peds therapist by training…)
  
Of course, cardiac doctors use CP for "Chest Pain"….duh….
  
Anyway…you may be wondering what SEO is. 
  
SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization". 
  
In a nutshell, it means "what can I do to my website to organically get it to rank higher".
  
In other words, what you can do to your website to rank higher WITHOUT paying for ads. 
  
Sounds awesome right? 
  
I was on the phone the other day with the Leading Google AdWords Expert for Physical Therapists in the United States and our conversation turn to SEO.
  
His words of wisdom? 
  
SEO IS DEAD (or almost dead). 
  
Why? 
  
Basically, you can play around with different aspects of your website, or even pay an "SEO company", to try to rank your website higher on Google…but ultimately this doesn't guarantee ANYTHING when it comes to ranking.
  
Google is constantly changing how and why it ranks search engine results. Right now, having video on your website is being rewarded, but in 6 months….who knows?!
  
There is only one way to guarantee your website consistently shows up at the top of search engine results…and guess what…it's called paid ads (or Google AdWords). 
  
Let's be honest…if Google can make money to rank you higher, do you think they're going to let you do it for "free"? No…of course not…they're a business.
  
So, I get asked a lot about doing SEO. One of my clients who I built their new physical therapy website for was paying an SEO company $300/month!!!
  
 And the truth is, you're better off investing your money in Google AdWords.
  
That way you can show up for the search terms that target your patient population. 
  
If you're a back pain expert, then you likely want to pay Google to have your site show up when people search for back pain in your city. 
  
Now…does this mean that you should ignore SEO altogether? ABSOLUTELY NOT. 
  
There are ways to design your website to improve your search engine rank, and you SHOULD do them. I teach them in my PT Website Secrets Workshop program, so if you follow that program you will KNOW that you're doing all you can from a design standpoint to help your Google search rankings. 
  
But would I pay a company $300 a month to do my SEO? Absolutely not!
